Broad-billed Parrot. They all went extinct since 1500 and they are only eight of the nearly two hundred species that have blinked out since then. Sure, we try not to introduce snakes, rats, cats, goats, pigs, and a host of other creatures to isolated islands. The eight species above still exist. Most species go extinct.

There was evidence of the mussels that would be a source of food for many species in the receding water line. There was also evidence of the damage that feral pigs can do all along the trail and along the water’s edge and we soon came across a small group of them. Feral pigs. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals.

Lake Eacham, Mt Hypipamee and Mount Molloy

In the parking area I immediately encountered a pair of Australian Brush-turkeys as well as a new species for me, a Grey-headed Robin. This huge member of the Australian robin family is really tame in this carpark, making it probably the easiest place n the world to see the species (other than the Tableland it is only found in New Guinea).
