Pasir Ris Park-Singapore

Our first destination for observing birds in Singapore during our three week visit in March was Pasir Ris Park. It would be a great location to visit if you only had a few hours in Singapore and wanted to go beyond the airport to go bird watching. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake.

Nice, Nice Birding in Narita

While planning a much-needed escape from the Western Hemisphere to Singapore, I had to explore the layover birding potential of Narita International Airport, one of two airports serving Tokyo. We missed a few crackers on the potential list like Green Pheasant , Ural Owl , and Falcated Duck , but added Firecrest and Japanese Waxwing.

A long way from nowhere

Our location meant that during the height of the pearling industry here the Pearling Masters sent their “whites&# to be laundered in Singapore by sea, as that was the fastest option! There is a tendency for some people to drive onto the beach “just because we can&# and have little regard for the nesting turtles and birds.

24 Hours in Bangkok; Bang Pra

Another interesting bird we flushed up was a male Red Junglefowl , a bird that Mike saw in Singapore recently and even chose as his bird of the year. Our next rarity was a Thick-billed Warbler , followed almost immediately by an Asian Barred Owlet , a bird I was very pleased with as a) I spotted it and b) I usually miss owls.
