Penguins here! <pause> There are few bird names that will elicit great big smiles and Penguin is one of them. I’ve been fortunate to see two Penguin species in the wild (African and Galapagos) and have dreamed of seeing more–maybe even all! <pause> Do I have your attention now?

How much do you know about owls? I’ve been fortunate to encounter many owls in my birding life, sometimes because I’m looking for them, sometimes happily by happenstance. What the Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds is a joyous, fascinating read. I don’t think so.

Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. The wildlife was what we expected. The highlight bird of the trip for me was an unexpected Northern Hawk-Owl; a bird I wanted to seed badly, but thought I did not have a chance to find one. Northern Hawk-Owl. May be in the future I will get to write about king and Emperor Penguins , and South Polar Skuas.

Clearly, author Phyllis Limbacher Tildes, the author of 24, soon to be 25, children’s books, is also a birder (and a little research brings up a presentation she gave at Ogeechee Audubon, Georgia with the biographical information and she and her family “love watching birds and wildlife seen near their lagoon on Skidaway Island.”

They also have some great apps specially designed for kids like the Owl app. My youngest and a Burrowing Owl 8. GAMES AND APPS. What kid does not love games? BIRD FEEDERS.

Cochran followed thrushes for 34 years and is now considered one of the founders of wildlife telemetry (instead of patenting his radio transmitters, he gave away his knowledge), but was a scientific outsider for much of his life. The photographs, many by the author, are credited at the end of the book.
