Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia. Birds in Delaware Bay.

My fiancé and I now fish and bird together frequently, and over my graduate program’s spring break turned our sights to Pisgah National Forest in the mountains of western North Carolina. As he made his way downstream, I noted common birds, including American Robins, Blue Jays , Carolina Chickadees , and a pair of Cedar Waxwings.

Mark Kirk and Alisha Belo are doing a southern Africa big year, trying to see 800 species. As of the end of March they had already reached a whopping 652 species ! Ali Iyoob is sitting pretty at 230 species in his North Carolina big year during which he is trying to break the state record of 351.

On a Big Year, every species counts equally, even the lowly House Sparrow. Ali Iyoob is looking to break the North Carolina Big Year record of 351 this year. As of my writing this he is off to a roaring start with 169 species recorded already. That would be more species than are on his life list!

Get on the plane anywhere from North Carolina to Texas or Florida and we are talking three to four hours. We just had to stop on the way, even if briefly, at Cinchona, Cinchona- always an easy place for in your face views of hummingbirds and species that visit the fruit feeders. This is a female Green Thorntail.

Here in the southeast, we get to watch as the flocks of sickle-winged midge tyrants funnel back south again every fall, pausing to congregate most evenings in the old smokestacks that tower above the empty tobacco factories in downtown Durham, North Carolina. I raised my camera. The conditions were perfect.
