Like several species, breeding Peregrines were extirpated during the height of the DDT era but have reclaimed their island domain in more recent years. The Channel Islands have all sorts of species and subspecies that are endemic to the islands, including mammals, reptiles, plants, and of course birds, many of which are nonmigratory.

I know you can bird in dark in New York and Newcastle, Weyburn and Walla Walla. In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen over 20 new species. Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to Bald Eagles in Whale Cove. This is the 3rd year for these most northerly known breeding pair of loons.

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. I tested the waters before my California pelagic, with a brief Atlantic Ocean voyage, a whale watching trip from Montauk, N.Y.

These sorts of tests have been done in many species and it has always been assumed (hoped), that what they found in the little white cages at the back of the zoology department had some wonderful relevance to what happened in the real world.
