Recently, I moved to a new place in Costa Rica. As is usual for a birder moving to a new place, I couldn’t wait to see what the new yard would bring. Right at home. This afternoon, I watched the edge of that green space, my new erstwhile home patch, and worked on a new yard list.

As far as right now, the first report of a Calliope Hummingbird from the local bird mailing list came in on April 22. When I was young, it was the only western hummer to routinely stray east in the winter months. My life Rufous was wintering in New York just outside the Museum of Natural History. It breeds into Alaska.

A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. I don’t need a leash, he stays right next to me,” Cody says. At the end, the dog catcher doesn’t come to their neighborhood anymore because there are no stray dogs there anymore.

That made me wonder why someone would put so much energy into a species that is regular in New York and not a lifer. As of Friday, 11 May, Anthony had already seen 283 species in New York State, a blistering and likely record-setting pace ( Richard Fried is the current record-holder with 352 species seen in 2011 ).

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. Fortunately, Tom spotted it flying in and landing in a tree over the house and we all enjoyed scope views of a great bird, a lifer for most of us and Isaac’s 400th bird in New York State!

The Army doesn’t allow soldiers to keep animals on the base, Peter explains, and he knew that it was dangerous for them to be spotted so near to the walls, as often stray animals will be ordered to be put down if they are found to be engaging with soldiers. Redgannet, you’ll have to come visit New York City sometime soon. But in 2020, with all my travel plans cancelled and pretty much everything shut down, I wasn’t straying too far from Albany, New York for birding. I’m sure once we get a vaccine that I can show you something better than a Black Kite !
