So, maintaining habitat along the coastline is vital to supporting these species. One way that we can help birds is to advocate on their behalf and to support organizations that conserve habitat. But I am happy to at least have had a small taste of these beloved species as they make their way to breed for the year.

Light Warbler Action in Central Park

It had been a long time since I’d seen any warblers besides Yellow and Nashville ; it had been a long time since I’d seen any Northern Cardinals or Blue Jays , period. My last species in the park was Wood Duck , which we have in Montana too but which is always fun to see. Anyone have any idea what species this is?

Costa Rican birders are clearly up to the task, because the Annual Arenal Bird Count stood out as one of the best organized and attended bird counts I’ve ever seen. The festivities kicked off with a pre-count presentation led by organizers Diego and Juan Diego. That might even have happened, were it not for the rain.

My Subtropical Bird Garden

It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. A Nashville Warbler , on the jacaranda tree. Organic gardening is a must; those bugs you are spraying could be bird food. Ash: My ash tree is at least 50 feet tall.

Birds that had been banded in Nashville, Tennessee. I always look forward to their return in the Spring, but swifts, like too many species of birds, aren’t doing so well. This is doubly concerning because this is a species that, for over 200 years, has tied its fate to our own.
