Sarah Atlas is a search-and-rescue dog handler, one of many civilian volunteers who serve with New Jersey Task Force 1. They were to be deployed to Ground Zero with 200 other members of New Jersey Task Force 1, including structural engineers and medical workers, as well as other search-and-rescue people.

Of course, I jest a bit in the above paragraph because as a sometime New Jersey birder I have birded the Delaware Bay and seen sights such as the memorable image below, in which thousands of Red Knots, Dunlins, and Short-billed Dowitchers fly up as if connected telepathically.

Seymour lives in New Jersey but she gets around, too. As anyone knows who has been put under for a medical procedure with “twilight” anesthesia, waking can be weird. I know that you are only passing through. So for just a week or two, it’s me and you. It’s a catchy song with gorgeous vocal harmonies and a swell guitar break.

She was tired, thin, and had several medical issues. Instead I called my friend Cathy at the famous Raptor Trust in New Jersey, where they have a fully equipped hospital and full-time veterinary technicians on staff. The naturalist got out of his car, picked her up, took the tape off her legs, and took her to a local zoo.
