Maggie Ciarcia, a solo wildlife rehabilitator in Carmel, NY specializing in small mammals and game birds, received a notice from New York State Electric and Gas that tree trimming was scheduled for her neighborhood and someone would contact her. But back to power companies. No wildlife rescue required. Ah, Europe! Fish & Wildlife Service.

Recently, 29 fish species of fish were recorded in this area, together with 8 amphibians, 9 reptiles and 62 species of mammals (including 20 species of bats), together with Wild Boar , Roe Deer , Wildcat , Golden Jackal , Eurasian Otter , European Pine and Beech Martens , Steppe Polecat , Stoat and the Least Weasel.

Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?) Annex II of the Bern Convention lists 45 of Beljarica’s bird species, with a further 91 species in Annex III.

We didn’t know what to expect from the train that had at one time been used to transport bananas to the coast and is now used to transport ecotourists to the wildlife refuge. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to! It turned out to be pretty cool.

Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped.

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. For example , fallen figs do not seem to mind catching a ride with Oriental Pied Hornbills.
