The first thing I learned was that most animal-plant interaction did not involve mammals, or even birds. I remember taking an advanced seminar in plant-animal interaction, in preparation for my own study of human-plant interactions. Insects ruled. We spent most of the rest of the semester dealing with grasshoppers.

We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. We medicated her for maggots, picked at least 100,000 of the creepy critters from her abdomen, and finally treated the injury.

No, to me the saddest part of this whole situation is that the National Audubon Society has been missing in action for years on what is one of the most crucial conservation challenges facing our native birds, mammals, and herps.
