I’ve been leading a small but faithful group on Trinidad for several years to count birds within a livestock farm that is generally restricted to the public (you can read about some of those shenanigans here ); this was the first time I was to embark on a CBC on the smaller island of Tobago.

The Ubiquitous European Starling: The Bird We Love to Hate

They compete for nesting cavities with Wood Ducks, Buffleheads, Great Crested and Ash-throated Flycatchers, Tree Swallows and several species of woodpeckers and sapsuckers. This is one of the reasons why so many bird lovers dislike the European Starling.

Last CBC of the Decade

For the fifth year in a row, I was assigned the prolific and well-known Aripo Livestock Station at the foothills of Trinidad’s Northern Range. For birders who have visited T&T in the past, the livestock station has always been a staple site for several key species that would be fairly difficult elsewhere.

Their fragile homes, meager belongings and scant livestock attested to this, and yet the people seemed content with their lot in life. Other quality birds seen in the park that morning included the endemic Wattled Ibis, Banded Snake Eagle , migrant Pallid Harriers, Nubian Woodpecker and Brown Babbler.
