THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. However, Jewish and Islamic groups which can prove animals do not suffer more during ritual killing than in an ordinary slaughterhouse will be able to apply for permits.

Later it was determined these condors suffered from organophosphate poisoning after they were exposed to insecticides used for agriculture. Unfortunately, contemporary people from the high Andes are beginning to see condors as the enemy; a predator that will kill and eat livestock. It is true that condors eat dead animals.

One of the male cubs is suffering from anemia and has developed a rare but benign skin condition that also occurs in both wild and domestic felines. The species also often comes into conflict with people over livestock predation. Until then the cubs will remain behind the scenes with their mother and keepers.

If a person cares about what "livestock" experience on their way to becoming "meat," there is one easy, inexpensive action that person can take to make certain s/he is not a party to the various kinds and levels of suffering and injustice the animals experience. That action is to opt out and go vegan.

But all those things form part of a complex human good, and I cannot help thinking that, when added to the ecological benefits of small-scale livestock farming, they secure for us an honourable place in the scheme of things, and neutralize more effectively than the vegetarian alternative, our inherited burden of guilt.

There are moral reasons to go vegetarian: recognition that it is wrong to contribute to unnecessary animal suffering the injustice of exploiting animals and killing them for no good reason If human have rights, then many nonhuman animals also have rights, and confining and killing these animals for food violates these rights.
