High Elevation Birding in Costa Rica at Providencia

Stopping and walking produced most of the expected species, birds like Talamanca Hummingbird, Fiery-throated Hummingbirds, Large-footed Finches scratching the leaf litter and Yellow-thighed Finches rummaging in the vines. These smart looking birds are tropical sparrows.

Hermit Thrush in Forest Park

The birds were highlighted by my first of the year Chipping Sparrow , a gorgeous male Pine Warbler coming to the small platform feeder, and a very cooperative Hermit Thrush that foraged in the leaf litter two meters in front of me off and on for about fifteen minutes. And then I strolled home.

Birding Rockefeller State Park Preserve

Then we came to a wide open meadow with long grass, a view of the lake, Tree Swallows , Eastern Bluebirds , and Chipping Sparrows and it was nice. fledgling and female Eastern Bluebirds The lake was pretty and we found a nice bench to sit on for our picnic lunch while the clouds blew by and the Song Sparrow sang from a bush near by.

Corey did just this in this 2011 posting about Vesper Sparrow Pooecetes gramineus in New York State. You can see the Species Account for Henslow’s Sparrow above, in the banner photo. The most common bird in the state is the Song Sparrow, followed by Chipping Sparrow and Red-eyed Vireo, with American Robin coming in fourth.

Sure, migration was in evidence — both Kinglet species present, Hermit Thrushes everywhere, White-throated Sparrows tuning up their songs in such abundance that they provided an ongoing soundtrack, American Robins and assorted blackbirds on the move. C’mon, guys.

At Crocheron Park I was met by White-throated Sparrows , Mourning Doves , a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker , and, wait, what’s that flash of yellow? Then, amazingly, it flopped down in the leaf litter right in front of me where it alternated sunbathing and flipping leaves. Western Tanager !
