Berry Springs Nature Reserve and Darwin River Dam

We were constantly listening for any leaf litter movement and soon saw Orange-footed Scrubfowl turning over piles of leaves. We then heard a sound in the leaf litter and both said at exactly the same time “snake” We have never seen a snake move so fast.

Fairy Pitta in Australia-a sad story

As keen birdwatchers, who just happened to have found the Night Parrots in Western Australia, they were keen to look for the Fairy Pitta at first light the next day. We noted that the Sobrane Gallery had a lot of leaf litter underneath it. We widened our search, but we kept returning to the leaf litter under the Sobrane Gallery.

Around the picnic area at the weir the Galahs were busy on the ground feeding and the ground was also littered with the tips of the trees. We hiked the Glen Brook Dam trail on our visit and although there were not many birds to be seen that day we did encounter our first Red-capped Parrots , which were of course high up in the trees!

The route map near the Springwood train Station As we walked through the houses to start the walk we had a wonderful surprise-our first ever Australian King Parrots ! These parrots are 43cm, so rather large! Ferns were prominent and it was very easy to walk quietly due to all of the damp leaf litter. In the gully!
