Owls and eagles and ducks and hummingbirds and parrots and woodpeckers are all things that a regular nonbirding joe or jane can, with time and a few color photographs, see the appeal of.

Living a highly migratory lifestyle, I’ve had a lot of patches, but honestly none I ever forged a strong and lasting bond with…my very first patch was destroyed by a golf course, so I didn’t get the best start to patch-birding. After this, patch birding will never be the same. It is known.

We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. An itinerant lifestyle, while wonderful in some regards, does not lend itself to forming certain connections. Even at our last stop of the day we managed to add a Savannah Sparrow and a new high count for Horned Grebe. While I enjoy birding with others, I’ve never really been part of the warp and weft of a birding community.
