Duck hunting is big business in the United States. Well, inspired by the success of this program, 10,000 Birds contributor Larry Jordan is part of an effort to create a Wildlife Conservation Stamp that would share some of the same goals as the duck stamp, but perhaps be a little more palatable to people who don’t hunt birds.

Historical data indicated that since the first settlers arrived 53 percent of the original 221 million wetland acres found in the contiguous United States had been destroyed.

Sure, you can find it across much of the eastern United States, even as far north as southern Canada but I ask you, are you really seeing a Prothonotary Warbler if you’re not watching it pick through a flooded forest in the south? Her opinion matters, and he waits with baited breath. Proud cavity-owners!

The search for the next new bird is that much more fulfilling when you’re limited to the smallest of the arbitrary political boundaries in the United States, and the search for those birds necessitates a broad working knowledge of the county of the sort that can only be attained through experience. 500 miles inland?

Federal funding for conservation is dependent on the revenue raised by selling the duck stamps, a unique dynamic for wildlife managers in the United States.
