In between showers, we were able to go investigate a bit and we found a few Blue-gray Gnatcatchers , fishing Osprey , and chickadees. Not only can you see cormorants, turnstones, and pelicans up close and personal, but as it is on a point, it is a good spot to scope out pelagic species.

I remember, several times while motionlessly surveying birds, I found myself being investigated by Striped Field Mice , who would dare to come to sniff me. As a proof, two Dalmatian Pelicans are flying low above us, while a Bluethroat disappears into the nearby bush. The Sun is just rising.

Magpie Goose eaten by a crocodile!

The Australian Pelican obviously decided it was safe to continue on with its feeding after the incident and observed the crocodile consuming the Magpie Goose. Parry’s Lagoon Nature Reserve

Star Finch We heard some rustling near the boardwalk close to the hide in the middle of the day and closer investigation produced an active Buff-banded Rail. Buff-banded Rail There were only four Australian Pelicans in the area that we could see and they spent most of the hours that we were in the hide busy trying to find food.

Camping by the Fitzroy River

Goanna investigating the drop-off. It was the first time we had not seen Australian Pelicans in the area, but also we had never been there when the river level was so high. A goanna wandered into our camp area trying to get to the river for a drink no doubt. It soon realised there was a significant drop-off and wandered off.

Further along the track I noticed some short pieces of tree branches dropping to the ground and on further investigation there were Sulphur-crested Cockatoos high up in the tree. The walls around the shallow areas are also good roosts and on one visit there was a lonely Australian Pelican taking a rest. Australian Pelican.

Negri River birding

They were even investigating an old fire pit, which was interesting to observe. I have failed to mention the really large birds in the area, but Brolga and Australian Pelicans flew over the area while we were there. On pulling up in the shade mid-morning we soon heard the sound of Crimson Finch and they were busy feeding all around us.
