You are walking on a wooded path in Pennsylvania. No, you have not stumbled upon a WWI re-enactment, but a startled Ruffed Grouse , the state bird of Pennsylvania. The legislature named the grouse the state bird in 1931 , and as it is a game bird it is legal to hunt them in the fall and winter seasons.

Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest

I am not anti-hunting. The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. Obviously killing contests have nothing to do with traditional hunting, and “animal abuse” is normally used when describing domestic animals. This is baloney.
