In early April, a spectacular parrot that can be found on just one island worldwide made the headlines when a volcano threatened it with extinction: the St. Vincent Parrot of the Lesser Antilles. The volcano eruption is only the latest of the many threats that the parrot has faced in the past century.

The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. On top of being illegal to capture and sell birds in the country, it is also immoral. It is quite simple.

Descriptions are similarly compressed–no icons or silhouettes or physical descriptions. I did learn that not every bird with “Cuban” in the name is a Cuban endemic.

The Conservation section is frustratingly brief, stating the expected—massive loss of forest due to logging and a plantation economy, weak enforcement of laws regulating hunting and trade, understaffing of reserves and parks. There is no entry for Lory. Or, I can peruse the 107 family listings in the Table of Contents.
