It has entertaining stories, includes animals people care about because they like them (and also addresses that concept), and it describes how the numbers of various species decreased to the point of being classified as "endangered" or worse. It's a great primer on extinction and conservation for the layperson.

The life list got off to a great start in January with ticks from Hawaii and smashed through the 4000 mark by mid January after Corey visited Jamaica. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again. Extinction is what befalls the species that fails to adapt, to survive, to thrive.
