In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. In Uganda I would often cross paths with Chimpanzees as they went about their lives and I went about mine (which was living with a troop of monkeys). In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins.

Hey, What About the Great Auk?

Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. If something got rare we’d just tuck a preserve around it and keep it as a tourist attraction. For a child of those 80s, things seemed fairly hopeless.
