They like to fly in pairs or groups and in the evening they come together in big groups to roost in a favorite ‘dormitory’ tree. Illegal capture for the wild animal trade is an obvious peril for such a charismatic species, but this big blue bird is also hunted both for its meat and feathers.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season.

If you’re a birder though, you had better have a police escort as some of my birder friends had to last week, while they went as part of an Important Bird Area data gathering group. It is indeed legal to hunt certain birds such as Woodpigeon , Chukar , and Turtledoves.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. It is too early to show.
