Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Dear ARAN Members, I remember as a young child throwing stones and sticks at a terrified greyhound that slept in a back shed a few blocks from where I live. He would not return for many hours.

Charles had a horrible final 24 hours, full of pain and suffering, due to a narcotic reaction (Tramadol). Narcotic reactions aren't common, Tramadol reactions aren't common, and greyhounds aren't known for their adverse reactions to Tramadol. I curled up with him and held him until the very last moment.

but a friend who volunteers for a rescue group told me of a greyhound event around the corner from my house. If Violet can be said to love anyone, it's other greyhounds. There were 15 greyhounds in the small pet food store, and Violet and Stanley were equally uninterested in the event. We weren't planning to adopt another.

And that means for the animal rights movement: Social entities like compassion, empathy and suffering are very important factors to motivate humans to change their behaviour. And the only way to totally alleviate that suffering is to not use the animal. And the only way to totally alleviate that suffering is to not use the animal.

On a very quiet night during a lull in the drama of the ducks, I was researching the Greyhound racing industry, and seething over its treatment of dogs as well as the support it often gets, through subsidies, to help it survive. When I reached the living room I was aghast to see Emily, lying on her side, relaxing and licking her paws.

I think part of the original work's problem was that it was too ambitious--not to mention expensive to produce--and everything suffered. After failing miserably at a long pamphlet in 2007, I decided to shorten it by 50% and focus on a different audience: people who use animals.
