Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In May 2008, 41 of the 43 rays at the Calgary Zoo’s 37,000-litre touch-tank died.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches?

It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” They just sit and pretend not to be there to avoid interaction.” Generally, this is not a bird getting a lot of good press.
