Trumpeter Swans: Don’t Shoot Them

10,000 Birds

This morning’s news had this: During this year’s open of waterfowl season, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center admitted more trumpeter swans for bullet wounds than ever before. …Veterinarian hospital workers in Roseville see projectile wound, or bullet wound, injuries quite frequently. Many years ago, back in the 1970s, I visited my sister, who lived in West Yellowstone, Montana, in the dead of winter. We rented snow mobiles and drove into Yellowstone.

Black Bear

Animal Person

He was bleeding from several bullet wounds, and visibly in excruciating pain. Somehow men have convinced themselves that that is a worthy activity, and they even have the gall to call it sport, as if it’s a fair game played on equal footing. Or as if the other team is even aware the game is being played and has agreed to participate.

A Wild Bird Rehabber Says Farewell

10,000 Birds

I was used to photos shared by rehabbers – gory wounds, wince-inducing x-rays, fledglings with terrible feathering thanks to uninformed “rescuers.” Since then it’s been a bimonthly grab bag of bird rehab and all the fun and games that go with it, as well as posts on the dangers wild birds face. When my book “ Flyaway: How A Wild Bird Rehabber Sought Adventure and Found Her Wings ” came out in 2009, one of my favorite reviews was by Corey Finger of 10,000 Birds.

European Call to End Bird Trapping

10,000 Birds

It seems that it came off rather well, and was co-organized by the Cyprus Game Fund and members of the Bern Convention. But the most talked about issue throughout was the ambelopoulia problem in Cyprus, with relevant presentations from the Game Fund, SBA Police, Terra Cypria and of course BirdLife Cyprus.&# It took out the power plant which supplies 60% of the Republic’s power grid, killed 13 people, wounded some 60 more, and pretty much destroyed two villages.

Starlings and Eagles

10,000 Birds

The aim of the game was to band raptors, and specifically to band Golden Eagles. Any bird that was wounded — and a bander could often prevent that fate by firing the net quickly enough — was nursed back to health. It required a bit of an ethical adjustment. Here I was, sitting patiently in a blind, watching a tethered European Starling on a string.
