I understand this is a children's book, but particularly if you're trying to be a voice for animals, it would behoove you to make connections that might be missed otherwise. For instance, the animals are enslaved. I'm giving the book a vegan/animal rights message because that's my lens. Or any vegan message.

And vegans are accused of imposing our belief systems and brainwashing kids? Why is the vegan message the harmful one that can get one fired from teaching? What kind of lesson is that?

Big fail here for Animal Person. I didn't do the right thing for Animal Person. Lesson #20 We still don't know what will make a critical mass of people go vegan. But other than multi-pronged, multi-media, persistence, I have no idea what will be necessary to make most people go vegan. But I didn't.

Vegan education/advocacy for animals is easiest for me when I know my audience. And right now, Mercy for Animals' Farm to Fridge Tour is doing that, too, in addition to picketing and getting mainstream media exposure for the short film. PETA's been using horrifying images for years.

I want to talk about why we shouldn't be using animals and that it's infinitely easier to be a vegan than it was 20 years ago. So there are more vegans and fewer animals used by humans, right? The tactics have made PeTA "the largest animal advocacy group" "with more than 2 million members across the globe."

I don't need to "remind myself" of how bad it is to bolster my commitment to veganism. So I do what I can do, beginning of course with being vegan. And part of meeting my own needs, by the way, is the need to care for animals who have been discarded. I choose not to watch videos or bombard myself with images of suffering.

Steiner might feel less lonely as an ethical vegan—he says he has just five vegan friends—if he recognized that he has allies in mere vegetarians (like me), ethical omnivores and even carnivores. If the goal is not moral perfection for ourselves, but the maximum benefit for animals, half-measures ought to be encouraged and appreciated.

Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. The message Sky gets at Babies-R-Us is largely that animals are her friends. Our job is to make sure that her respect for animals doesn't turn into insult and betrayal. At least at this stage.
