For some it allows you to enjoy the marvel of nature, for others it allows you to tick the many amazing species of fish and sea life that is down there (even the occasional vagrant). Goat Island, off New Zealand’s Northland, was an amazing diving location without any birds. Hiwihiwi ( Chironemus marmoratus ).

It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. Gamebirds, such as turkeys, pheasants, partridges, quail, Mallards and the like were also brought, as were popular sport fish.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. A Konso village perched atop a terraced hill.

A foraging Northern Bald Ibis near Tamri, Morocco by Adam Riley Extinction, driven by loss of feeding habitat, nest disturbance, hunting and poisoning, seemed inevitable. Habitat destruction, hunting and disturbance are further factors affecting the population.

Chamois is an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, found in mountainous areas of Europe from Spain to the Caucasus. Turn-off to a macadam road winding through the forest and… there’s a Chamois on the road! In a second, it disappeared into trees, down towards a rocky gorge, but not before I spotted it.

This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere. Here we find two of the most interesting members of the family, the Crested Moa , unique of course for the shaggy crest on its head, and the mountain-goat-like Upland Moa.
