I am so sick of the feral cat colonies that infest so many locations that I like to bird. And while I am sick of the cat colonies I am even more sick of the deluded people who believe that by feeding feral cats they are somehow helping them. They get hit by cars, suffer from parasites, predated upon by coyotes, and die from disease.

And so, when Salvador Ramirez left, there were feral goats on the island of San Clemente, the southernmost of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. The Stephen’s Island Wren suffered a fate common to many island species of birds around the world. Tibbles did contribute, but it was a population of feral cats that did the bulk of the killing. Ironically these are the same feral cats that exterminated the wren in the first place. Gone forever.
