I asked Virginia Guhin, Education Programs Coordinator of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ES NERR). I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. “What’s that?” Guhin knew without binoculars, “ White-tailed Kite ,” she identified.

Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species. For the past five years I have been fortunate to have a Ferruginous Hawk wintering near a farm in a grassland area below the foothills where I live. Fish and Wildlife Service and as a Sensitive Species by the Bureau of Land Management 1.

It’s the warbler that is often the last unchecked species on birders’ life lists and, whether you list or not, for most of us observing it is a once in a lifetime experience. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list. Previously, even researchers had problems getting access to nesting Kirtland’s Warblers.

I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April. Then we watched an adult and a chick feeding along the poolside.

I tried to get a better idea of what exactly the definition of cuckoo-dove is but am still not very clear about it – Wikipedia only offers the rather formal definition “any of several species of bird in the genera Macropygia , Reinwardtoena, and Turacoena of the pigeon family.” But I may well be wrong.
