Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

My third trip was six months spend working on a monkey project in the jungles of Uganda. In Uganda I would often cross paths with Chimpanzees as they went about their lives and I went about mine (which was living with a troop of monkeys). Ugandan Mangabeys were part of my family once. Amazing stuff.

Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection. While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe.

In spite of this New Zealand does have an iconic family of birds that has served as an emblem for the country for over a century, the kiwi. They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. They would all be wrong, as New Zealand has no official National Bird.

Old World Vultures are nestled within the family Acciptridae along with the hawks and eagles. It’s actually a pretty classic example of convergent evolution, wherein two unrelated families of lifeforms evolve to fill the same niche independently. millions years ago. We got good looks at Yellow-breasted , Crimson-breasted , Yellow-vented , and Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers along with more mundane representatives of the sunbird family, Plain Sunbird and Thick-billed Spiderhunter. And though I didn’t see an elephant, they lurk in Panti… this is an elephant fence protecting a palm plantation.
