The site is famous for a place called Monkey Mia, where dolphins have learnt to come up to the beach a few times a day to get snacks. I have wanted to see a representative of this family for twenty years so it was quite a day as far as lifers went. That’s fine, and I like dolphins, but I usually prefer them away from a circus.

Kaziranga National Park is famous for having 80% of the surviving population of the Indian Rhinoceros , as well as being the favourite park of the British royal family, whenever they visit India. Apparently, there are about 400 species present, yet 492 were eBirded already (list-building?). Other wildlife includes Phayre’s Leaf Monkey.

If we assume (probably incorrectly) that of apes and monkeys, they all descended from a monkey like ancestor, than apes are monkeys. In other words, the group of mammals that includes all the monkeys, which is rather large (and not accurately defined because I’ve not said what a “monkey” is … am I including lemurs?)

All of the forest in these areas has been cleared many years ago to give way to food production and housing for small towns that continually expand as the local families grow and require more resources for food, housing and employment. We found this little Red-cheeked Woodpecker family surviving on a dead tree near the road to Canande.

In spite of this New Zealand does have an iconic family of birds that has served as an emblem for the country for over a century, the kiwi. There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans.
