Instead I called my friend Cathy at the famous Raptor Trust in New Jersey, where they have a fully equipped hospital and full-time veterinary technicians on staff. The driver took her to a local nature center.

Bird Migration and Conservation Meet at Selva Bananito, Costa Rica

We might not get the variety of a New Jersey autumn but we do get major numbers of species that winter in South America. Truly a last minute bird, most of the group were already in the cars and ready to leave when local guide Justo and myself heard one give its raptor-like vocalization (it also gives a cat-like one).

October 23 2017: I read the text message confirming that there is indeed a Common Greenshank at Edwin B. Forsythe NWR.
