One paper – describing research conveniently done at the university campus of Chittagong University, presumably close to the canteen – looks at resource partitioning between this bee-eater and another one, the chestnut-headed bee-eater. The first bird I saw in Saigon was less exotic though – a Eurasian Tree Sparrow.

Over the next few days, I found increasing numbers, goldfinches, juncos, white-throated sparrows. FLAP is the Fatal Light Awareness Program, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and this is how they raise awareness. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. I hoped it was an anomaly.

They are also raised commercially for meat and eggs, as described in that beacon of ornithological knowledge, the World’s Poultry Science Journal. Thank god that this does not apply to humans. Not a bad name and a good reason to show this species again.

Seaside Sparrows were singing on both sides and occasionally popped up to give us a view before diving deep back into the Spartina grass, hopefully getting ready to nest. Seaside Sparrow. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. Eastern Meadowlark.
