If you cannot share the bird with your guest, try not to share the experience because it makes everything they have seen a little league birding, compared to your mega tick. And that experience has recently put me in a role of an ecotourism consultant in a project aiming at creation of a local ecotourism product.

Volunteering provides a very different experience to tourism though. In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. And come the new year I’ll be telling you all about my experiences this time around. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins.

’ They are challenging to find, frustrating to photograph, and the antbird experience often includes heat and humidity, mud and bugs. I was practically right next to the two in this photo (and, note the Rufescent Tiger-heron photobomb). It was one of those magic experiences when you are so absorbed you forget you have a camera.

Seeing a wild Snow Leopard is every wildlife enthusiast’s dream, probably the ultimate and most elusive wildlife experience on the planet. Knowing this, we were certainly far from disappointed by our experience but we of course all dreamed of a closer view. View of our camp in the Rhumbak Valley.

As she continued her monologue about these cats, the Wildcat cautiously walked in our direction, never taking its eyes off of us, stiff-legged, ears motionless, striped like a standard “tiger” domestic cat but entirely in grays. He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals. That was one of his cats.

Having more than 1300 bird species, including over 75 endemics, it is hard to resist the lure of India – something I know from personal experience. Yet, with larger protected areas things get more complicated. Small reserves such as the Khijadiya and the Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuaries in Gujarat are mostly well described.
