This homely place is the aptly named Paradise in Portugal , owned by birder and purveyor of fine wines, Frank McClintock. Paradise in Portugal is a perfect example of this.

After three visits to southern Italy, followed by a lone excursion to Belgium, we’ll head back south to end our month-long “Grand Tour” of falconry-themed wine and ales in Portugal. Portugal has a long history of both falconry and winemaking. Portugal was a source of less poetic, practical information on falconry, as well.

Experiencing Spring at EVOA

Interestingly, a bird of prey set off a psychological experiment. We exchanged notes on where to find good birds in southern Portugal. The ponds were full of birds as usual with abundant Common Snipe as well as Ruff , some Dunlin , Stilts and a few ducks, including Red-crested Pochards. Could it be? Pictures were taken to confirm.

What the rings reveal

The rings revealed that one of the birds had been ringed as an adult in Portugal, the other as a chick in Spain’s Ebro delta, where the biggest colony of these gulls is to be found. Audouin’s Gull is an attractive species restricted as a breeding bird to the Mediterranean, but many winter in North Africa.
