Those birds that get to experience northern winters apparently lose their easygoing southern nature and become very very angry. So in addition to having to suffer through that awkward teenage period of feeling like it doesn’t fit in with the other kids, the adolescent Red-tailed Hawk doesn’t even fit in with its own species.

If you cannot share the bird with your guest, try not to share the experience because it makes everything they have seen a little league birding, compared to your mega tick. Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded.

The list serv is burning up with news of a vagrant (we hope, and dutifully analyzed for traces of cage wear) Harris Hawk , movements of White-winged Crossbills and Pine Grosbeaks , Northern Pygmy Owls popping out of the shrubbery, and other winter goodies.

According to Wikipedia, “A l owl ife is a term for a person who is considered morally unacceptable by their community” The local Nanhui shrikes are well aware that the word “lowlife” has an owl hidden inside, and mark the appearance of owls in their territory with harsh protests. Not this one though.

.’ Not every species has a GV section, and the amount of description allocated in each section varies from a brief notation on color differences (most species) to the uncertainty of how voice variations relates to color morphs (Vermiculated Screech-Owl). In this specific case, I have to go with the latter.
