What is the consensus on places that offer experiences like petting an otter or kangaroo?

My wife is obsessed with otters. Somebody told me about Barn Hill Preserve of Delaware where you can pay to "swim with otters" and pet a kangaroo. So is this type of experience something I should consider or is this just a shady practice and we should stay away from it?
