Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela.

Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. And some ornamental trees planted in the road divider offer food for Chinese Grosbeak. Like fast food, but free and likely more healthy.

Now, if you can get beyond that, and if you haven't read Pollan and Schlosser and seen King Corn and The Future of Food (both of which are far more thorough on gentically-modified food, corn and Monsanto), you might actually learn something.

It is mainly scrub and woodland in a dry area with a mosque and fast food restaurant in the central area. Please give a bit of feedback to improve the experiences of those who may follow you. Cabs may be tricky to find for the return, so ask the driver to wait, or better still, ask him to drive slowly round the road circuit.

Honest food in a fifties’ diner while reminiscing about all those movies you have seen about diners in the fifties. That was undoubtedly the sighting of the day – this striking red bird in a white and dark green landscape. Coming down from the emotional high we noticed our grumbling stomachs: time to eat. I can recommend it.
