I’m wondering as I write if you are shaking your head, uneasy that all these FACTS will interfere with your love of observing owls, an experience that easily borders on the mystical for some of us. But what do we know beyond these commonly seen and heard behaviors?

I found out about it while looking for information on the unfortunate penguin I discussed last week (which is still alive in Wellington Zoo), and so I stopped by on my way home to have a look. The black on the face isn’t as dark and even (whitish around the eye) and the black on the tip of the bill reaches further up the bill.

While it’s no longer possible to see this regal macaw soar gracefully through the Brazilian skies, to be able to worship them—even from afar at one of the conservatories or zoos—would be a dream, at last, come true. I worked with a pair of motmots at a US zoo and fell in love with their vibrant colors and unique tails. Wicked, right?

Unfortunately, perhaps because of drier than normal weather, or because big ideas tend to be learning experiences, we couldn’t find any flowering Heliconias at a restaurant or even along the road. Amazingly, the strategy paid off when a tiny hummingbird materialized on the tip top of a twig just like coquettes love to do.

The food was better than decent, which exceeds our experience of Panamanian cuisine at most other locations. Radisson Summit Hotel and Golf Panama really serves a superior birding experience, just by nature of the amazing forest surrounding it. Park in the lot across from Summit Gardens and Zoo, then walk across the railroad tracks.
