I want to work in Aquarium and Tropicarium mini zoo in Serbia(to help animals there and if they arent treated well to see of I can make a diffrence.Also to show good sides of them to people that fear such animals like reptiles/arachnids and such). That is, incidentally, my universal experience on pelagics, as everyone has been very good and very experienced on all my trips.) But I took a day for myself for a 12-hour pelagic trip sponsored by Buena Vista Audubon.

So we made our way to the grounds of the Uganda Wildlife Education Center , a former zoo that now rehabilitates injured animals. Rare birds are weird, and a bird as rare as a first country record is a special experience. On the shore of Lake Victoria, the grounds were surprisingly birdy, and we quickly built up a nice checklist.

I ache that I will never see what the photographer has seen, but hope that maybe if I try hard enough I will see some kind of echo of this experience in the image. My suspicion that all might not be well was actually confirmed the following day when it was taken to Wellington Zoo in order to remove all the sand it had been swallowing in an effort to cool down (Emperor Penguins will apparently swallow snow in the wild to cool down, a behaviour that doesn’t work as well with sand!).

It is quite a sight to experience hundreds of Abdim’s Stork dropping out of the skies from seemingly thin air, to gorge on burnt or fleeing insects and rodents. Due to disturbance by fishermen, habitat destruction and nest robbing for zoos and bird collections, the Shoebill is now classified as vulnerable.

I imagine the female bosses the male around, but maybe I am anthropomorphizing there based on my experience in recently working on an apartment with my wife. In Black-throated T**s , nest building is done by both sexes, though the female takes the dominant role (HBW). Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword.

While the jays did catch our attention by way of a smart crest and different shades of blue and gray punctuated by a black necklace and mascara, they were part of our common natural experience, their existence was taken for granted. Toucans were something else entirely and we couldn’t even see them at the local zoo.

One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. So the poor turtle got a bit of a shake around before I released him safely into a ditch.

The food was better than decent, which exceeds our experience of Panamanian cuisine at most other locations. Radisson Summit Hotel and Golf Panama really serves a superior birding experience, just by nature of the amazing forest surrounding it. Park in the lot across from Summit Gardens and Zoo, then walk across the railroad tracks.

I do think that in my lifetime greyhound racing will end, circuses will be animal-free, elephants and marine mammals won't be in zoos, and fur might even be banned. The whole development of society must be slow and continuous, the changes incremental. ( None of these things will happen without targeted campaigns. What do you think?
