The lovely Bali Mynah , categorized as Critically Endangered by BirdLife International, is considered one of the world’s rarest birds. Not all mynahs are bad , right?

The births are part of park’s partnership in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP). Found only in the southern tip of Thailand and the Malay Peninsula, it’s estimated that only 500 Malayan tigers remain in the wild. The condition is being monitored by Busch Gardens’ veterinarians.

I found out about it while looking for information on the unfortunate penguin I discussed last week (which is still alive in Wellington Zoo), and so I stopped by on my way home to have a look. The black on the face isn’t as dark and even (whitish around the eye) and the black on the tip of the bill reaches further up the bill.

Amazingly, the strategy paid off when a tiny hummingbird materialized on the tip top of a twig just like coquettes love to do. This hat-trick and hummingbird ace in the hole was the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a place I usually avoid because it’s expensive to enter, is sort of like a zoo, and crawling with people.

He has earned his tip. During 1990s, the South China Tiger became extinct in the wild (some still survive in zoos) and the number of extinct races reached four. Our guide is standing on his seat, scanning the area with binoculars. All of a sudden, in a hushed voice he says one word only: “Tigers!”
