The search for the next new bird is that much more fulfilling when you’re limited to the smallest of the arbitrary political boundaries in the United States, and the search for those birds necessitates a broad working knowledge of the county of the sort that can only be attained through experience. You simply cannot go wrong.

I thought of this experience as I read Still the Same Hawk , a collection of twelve essays about nature and New York City, edited by John Waldman. Not surprisingly, I found the most compelling essays were those by people who had had similar experiences to mine. This is what got me, the incongruity.

A denizen of the brackish shallows all along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts regularly found as far north as South Carolina. Sure, they weren’t sitting on my head or eating out of my hand like other birders experience, but I’ll take it. Florida, and Merritt Island, wins again.
