The Lodge at Pico Bonito is an inviting, idyllic place for relaxation as well as for enjoying wildlife. There was definitely always the temptation to just sit at the restaurant, sip a warm cup of coffee or tea, and watch the constant antics of parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, and more going about their daily routine.

Among birders, wildlife photographers, and nature enthusiasts, it is renowned for its incredible concentrations of birds at the end of the dry season. During this time, the fish trapped in the shrinking pools of water attract hordes of herons, egrets, storks, and other wetland species. I must mention one thing.

I didn’t realize how many new species I would see within the city itself! Because of this, areas around the city that were once sleepy are now “urban,” with humans and wildlife struggling to keep up. Given how far west I found myself, I was hoping for at least a handful of new birds.

This is a bit of a rabbit hole, however, and you may find yourself, as I did, spending the day watching videos of Superb Lyrebirds singing and Kea Parrots making snowballs. It’s fascinating stuff. Most of the chapters in The Bird Way focus on one or two scientists who has done extensive research on ‘outlier behavior.’
