When you mention “Africa” to a birder, it is likely that at least two thirds will instantly think “Kenya”, and for a good reason: it is home to over 1,060 bird species and boasts many globally important birding areas. Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.

Most of them had brought kids along as well (probably among my least favorite mammals), which were pulled on gaudily colored skiing sleds by their hapless parents, creating a constant raucous noise. So, all this makes birding this place an occasionally less than pleasant experience. Never fails to startle them. “See, only three!”

The food was better than decent, which exceeds our experience of Panamanian cuisine at most other locations. Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site.

Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. We arrived at the rather untouristy seasite town of Lahad Datu where our guide dropped us off at the office of the lodge.
