The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! In Costa Rica, although I did spend a memorable one years ago in the Osa Peninsula where flocks of parrots flew into the mangroves while we feasted on turkey, pie, and the works, we have no actual Wild Turkeys , nor an official Thanksgiving.

I don’t believe, but this is subject to correction, that the wild and domestic Turkey were ever called by different binomials. Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of February 2021)

I thought for sure that Wild Turkeys on the wing would be the highlight of my birding weekend, but that we before I came upon a Barred Owl in broad daylight perched on a power line in Alma, NY. Apparently, this winter warrior has hunted the same farm field from the same vantage point for a couple of weeks now.

There are more than 50 regional endemics to choose from, and many birds are easier to see in Costa Rica than many other places because of access to habitat and/or lack of hunting pressure. No turkeys up in here, just a big wild and crazy Cracid! In some spots, this amazing bird even visits feeders. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove.
