Emmie loves her pets. She was never happier playing with the pet. Her mother came and sat next to Emmie while she held Carnie in her lap and petted him. Comforting an eight-year-old while she pets her dying hamster, dripping tears…it is easier to catch a breeze in your hands and return it to its home. Carnie was sluggish.

The bird was stripped of feathers and so badly battered that euthanasia was probable. It’s the bane of many rehabbers that they simply can’t get through to cat owners on this critical issue of free-roaming pets. A year later, in a new city and at a new wildlife hospital, I got my official volunteer apron and badge.
