These islands and their surrounding waters are protected as part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago. Midway, which was once a military facility, has long had mice and it once had rats, though they were eradicated in 1996.

Getting rid of rabbits and goats was something that had been done for many years, but it was generally thought that rats and cats would be impossible to remove from all but the smallest islands.
