Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. The experience was marvelous — but it also weighed heavily on me. Are they adaptable and remarkably enduring and resourceful? The climatic changes set in motion by the Industrial Revolution are now proceeding at a pace far greater than many species and ecosystems can adapt to naturally. That’s one of my photos above.
