Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This game reserve has 900 elephants – the second largest population in South Africa, after the Kruger National Park with 13,000. Nowadays, the Savannah Elephants are shorter and with smaller tusks, often without them. Sniffing us.

The Natal Spurfowl forages on rhinoceros and elephant dung (HBW) and does so without complaining. Each of these ‘families’ consists of a single mating pair and 1-5 ‘helpers’ who assist in raising the young. And I do not even want to think about which part of an old man’s anatomy the throat pouch reminds me of.

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. In November 2008, a virus killed a 15-month-old Asian elephant calf named Malti. She had been showing symptoms of the potentially lethal elephant herpesvirus, which leads to internal bleeding and heart failure.

Elephants, whales, hippopotamuses, giraffes, and alligators use low-frequency sounds to communicate over long distances, often miles; and bats, dolphins, whales, frogs, and various rodents use high-frequency sounds to find food, communicate with others, and navigate.
