As we gazed upwards at those backlit migratory warblers, I noticed a Bare-throated Tiger-Heron … nesting! And then there was a Green Heron , not only showing us its nest, but also an egg. I’m happy to say that the ones right on the other side of a low wall were not so large. And yet, there it was.

Or maybe they are quite excited about clarifying that Muscicapa latirostris is the wrong name for this bird while Muscicapa dauurica is right. An example is this study showing that indeed, cuckoo eggs are stronger than the eggs of the host species. Apparently, the authors of this paper think so.

The Large-billed Crow ( video ) is one of the natural enemies – in the study above, it predated 19 eggs from four pitta nests. I hope he is right. Unfortunately, the house this nest is built on is about to be destroyed – no tenant rights for birds in China, I am afraid.
